For the purpose of this website, technology means the application of science to industry. In other words, a new product or a new process which gives one business or other entity a competitive advantage over others. For most of human history technology was synonymous with machines or tools but it now extends to computer programs, financial services products and even methods of doing business.

The intellectual property rights that protect investment in technology include patents but also unregistered design rights including design rights in semiconductor topographies, literary copyright for computer programs and confidential information.
